Project Overview

Our team was commissioned to install a herringbone floor with a border, a classic layout known for its visual sophistication and complexity. The flooring was supplied by us but made by Ted Todd, a leading name in sustainably sourced, high-quality timber flooring.

Here’s an outline of the process involved:

Preparation & Priming

As with any high-end installation, preparation was key. We began by priming the subfloor to ensure optimal adhesion and moisture control. This crucial step creates the ideal base for a fully bonded installation, especially important for intricate designs like herringbone.

Laying the Crown Row & Filling the Field

With the floor prepped, we established a crown row – the central starting line from which the herringbone pattern radiates. Getting this row perfectly straight is vital, as it defines the symmetry of the entire layout.

We then filled the field, laying each herringbone block with precision and care. Every piece was aligned and set to maintain consistent pattern and spacing throughout the space.

Creating the Border

To frame the herringbone and add an extra touch of elegance, we crafted a bespoke border around the perimeter of the room. This involved:

Cutting and routing the border lines with precision

Installing the inlay border seamlessly into the layout

Ensuring all cuts were sharp, clean and accurately positioned

The border not only enhances the overall look but also showcases the attention to detail that went into the installation.

Fully Bonded Installation

The entire floor was fully bonded, meaning every block and border piece was adhered directly to the subfloor using a high-performance adhesive. This method provides enhanced stability, minimises movement, and significantly increases the longevity of the floor – essential for high-traffic or long-term use.

The Result

The Result

The completed floor is a striking combination of elegance, quality and craftsmanship. The natural tones and textures of Ted Todd timber, paired with the classic herringbone layout and detailed border, have transformed the space into something truly special.

If you're considering a luxury timber floor for your home or business, a herringbone layout with a bespoke border is a timeless and impactful choice.
